Sarah Balderston named ACAC Athlete of the Week

Sarah is the third on the Women’s Curling team. Sarah performed great at both Fall and Winter meets and at the ACAC Conference Championships. She was a big factor in helping her team win Gold at the Championships. Sarah’s strong will, great shot making and positive attitude, helps her perform well at any curling competition. She has an excellent attitude and has proven she can quickly recover and bounce back after a tough game; a great character to display with competitive sports. Sarah has proven herself to be a true team player and is able to maintain a high GPA while competing for the GPRC Wolves. Sarah was named to the Women's Curling All Conference Team.
Sarah is from Sexsmith, AB currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program at Grande Prairie Regional College.
The team is now preparing to compete at CCAA Nationals Invitational, March 20-24 in Peterborough.

Curling is Gold

Day 3 of the ACAC Conference Championships have been good for the Wolves. The Wolves Women's team have repeated as Conference Champions defeating NAIT 8-2 in the Gold Medal match. After a slow start, the team picked things up and dominated their final game. Sarah Balderston was selected as an ACAC All Conference player. The Women will now start preparations for the CCAA National Invitational tournamnet. The Mixed team took the silver medal losing their final game 6-2 to Augustana. This is a very good showing for our squad as they also placed Steven Albert and Jordan Guenette on the ACAC All Conference Team. Coach Caryl Sallows has done a great job with the Curling program which is evidenced by the performances of the teams.

The Wolves Women's Volleyball team placed 4th at the ACAC Conference Championships. They lost in 5 sets to Red Deer College with scores of 25-12, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 18-16. The girls fought hard all the way through the Championships and Coach Thomson is very proud of them.

Wolves Athletics congratulates all the players, coaches, and others who have made the season the success it has been. Congratulations and Thank You to all!

Day 2 at ACAC Conference Championships

The second day of the two ACAC Conference Championships the Wolves are involved in has been eventful. The Curling teams have played numerous games and the Women's Volleyball team played in a semi-final.

First for the Volleyball squad. All 4 matches today were decided in 5 game sets. Unfortunately, our Wolves lost to Medicine Hat College in 5 with scores of 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-10. The team had won its first two games but, as can happen in volleyball, the momentum changed. The girls played hard all the way through and we are proud of them. They will play today in the Bronze medal game versus Red Deer College.

The Curling teams completed the round robin games Saturday morning. The Mixed team lost their game resulting in them playing the 3-4 game at 2:00 pm. They won that game 7-2 and played in the semi-final at 8:00 pm. The team then proceeded to win the semi-final and are now set to play in the Gold medal game Sunday. I believe they needed an extra end to decide this. We wish them the best of success today.

The Women's team won their last round robin game which resulted in them playing in the 1-2 game Saturday afternoon. They won that game in an extra end giving them a bye into the Gold Medal game on Sunday. With this result, the Women will be eligible to attend the CCAA National Invitational Event to be held in March in Ontario. Only the Men's and Women's teams are eligible. It must be noted that this is an invitational event not a sanctioned national championship. This is the first step to attaining the national championship status similar to what Cross Country Running did. We will have more details later.

Best wishes for success to the teams and congratulations on the performnances to date!

Wolves Women's Volleyball Open with a Win!

The Wolves defeated MacEwan University Griffins 3 games to 1 to open their play at the ACAC Championships. Coach Thomson noted that the girls played really well especially Kaitlyn Cordingley, Tonya Dueck and Jordan Drezet. It is important that the girls all continue to play at thier best as they move to the semi-finals against Medicine Hat College. They will play them at 8:00 tonight. This will be a good challenge as they are playing in the Rattlers home gym and in prime time. To add to it, the Rattlers coach, Benj Heinrichs, is the ACAC Women's Coach of the Year. The best to the Wolves!

The win against MacEwan guarantees the Wolves 4th place. This is very good as the team was ranked 6th coming into the Championship. The scores from the opening round were 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 25-16.

Wolves Curling Having a Tough Opening Day

The Wolves Mixed Curling team split their games Friday defeating Concordia 3-2 then losing to MacEwan 8-7. The team will play Augustana, the host, at 10:00 this morning. The teams will then be seeded based on their results of the round robin and begin the playoff round later today.

The Wolves Women's team did not have a good opening day. The team dropped both of its games losing to NAIT 9-6 in the opening game and then losing 8-0 against Lakeland. The team is hoping to rebound Saturday as they meet Red Deer College at 10:00 am. The playoff round will begin later today when the games really start to count.

We wish both teams the very best today!

Wolves Women's Volleyball on the Court at 6:00 pm

The Wolves Women's Volleyball team will take to court at 6:00 pm Friday in their first match. The opponents are the Grant MacEwan Griffins whom they split with in the season. It will be a tough match as the last time they played it was 3 - 2 for the Wolves. The winner of this game goes to the semi's so we are lloking for a very good outing fromn the ladies.

Wolves Curling is on!

The Wolves Women's team and the Wolves Mixed team are getting ready for their opening round robin at the ACAC Conference Championships. Both teams have very good chances to medal and Coach Caryl Sallows is looking forward to their games. She will be reporting the results as the tournament progresses. The teams play a round robin which sets the seeding for the championship round. Stay tuned.

Wolves Going to ACAC Conference Championships

The Wolves Women's Volleyball team is on their way to the ACAC Women'sVolleyball Championships being held in Medicine Hat this weekend. At the same time, the Wolves Women's Curling Team and the Wolves Mixed Curling Teams are on their way to Camrose to participate in the ACAC Curling Conference Championships. All teams are well positioned to perform well at their respective events. We will endeavour to keep the site updated so that folks can follow the teams in their competitions.

This year is the first year that Curling will have access to a national event. Men's and Women's Curling will have a CCAA National Invitational Event hosting the conference's best teams. GPRC is excited about this event as the Women's program has done very well in the last couple of years and stand a good chance to represent ACAC at the "nationals".

We wish all teams the very best this comiong weekend.

Wolves Donate to Those in Need

IT’S COLD OUT THERE!  It’s -40C and the Wolves Men’s Basketball Team once again donate to the less fortunate. In what has become an annual donation, team captain Josh Nicol delivers another bag of toques and gloves to the Salvation Army. This is the second such donation this year.

“It’s really cold out there and I think it’s important that we all do something to help the less fortunate. I believe that acts such as this, along with the other volunteer activities we do as a team, are important.  Setting an example of ‘service to others’ helps to teach young men lessons that go beyond sport.”  Coach Nicol

Dig Pink Weekend

November 4 & 5, 2011

The GPRC Wolves Women’s Volleyball Team initiated a project to support Breast Cancer Research. The project was titled “Dig Pink”. The event took place at the Wolves Volleyball Home Opener against Concordia University College of Alberta.

A number of activities were planned to promote supporting Breast Cancer Research and to generate some revenues for the cause. The team dressed in new “Pink” uniforms supplied by the generosity of Peace Steel Inc. All the coaches wore pink as did the members of the Wolves Men’s Volleyball team.

To raise money, the Wolves Women sold pink ribbons and had raffles for prizes on both Friday and Saturday. The money from these activities was given to the Canadian Cancer Society, Alberta and NWT Branch. Total raised was $770.00. Stephanie Tschechne and Brittany Lefebvre made the presentation to Lindy Beauchamp-Chester of the Cancer Society.

The weekend was a huge success thanks to the efforts of the Wolves Women’s Volleyball Team and the generosity of the many supporters. Because of the efforts of the team, plans are now in the works to incorporate this program throughout Wolves Athletics teams for the 2012/13 season.
